Some pictures showing the demolition of our old geodesic dome and the construction of the replacement.
P7310103 is the old 'Dome'
cabin with a bunch of its contents sitting outside. It had fallen into
beyond-hope condition through bad construction and years of neglect.
The name of the picture is P + month (7) + date (31) + sequence number
(picture 0103 since I re-formatted the memory and re-started the
sequencing).
P8060001 shows the demolition
in progress
P8070060 shows the demolition
nearly complete
It took three thirty-yard dumpsters to haul it all away, over the course of
several weekends!
P8120016 shows just the
foundation left and a big red dumpster in the background mostly obscuring
the new garage.
P9040017 shows the crew
enjoying a meal (if you can call it that!) around the campfire, with our
tent in the background. We slept in the tent each time we were up there for
all of July, August, September, and October, including some might cold
nights (down into the 20's!).
P9040038 shows Megan and Paul's
dog Charlie -- he's helping, in among the floor joists.
P9210001 shows Judy hard at
work building a segment of the 'riser wall' -- the three-foot straight
(right-angle) wall that supports the Dome's strut-work.
P9230008 shows the riser-wall
in place and the struts taking shape. In the foreground is
Joe Frawley -- the elderly gent
who builds and sell the Dome kits. He just turned 90! In the background
are his assistant on the ladder, and my business partner standing and
looking on.
P9230015 shows the whole
strut-work in place. Only took a couple hours, but that was the easy part!
P9240038 shows Meg and Paul
nailing in place some of the forty triangles that create the geodesic dome
itself.
P9240042 shows fearless Kate
and Meg adding some supports across the middle of the triangles near the
top.
PB (B = November) 160004 shows
the Dome covered in tarps and early snow!
PB260005 shows the big 'picture
windows' and the roofing going on. We hired someone to do that, and the
plumbing, and the electrical work, and the siding. Of course, that meant
coordinating schedules, tolerating delays, etc.
P1070001 (now we're into 2006)
shows Kate's wonder dog, Toivo, enjoying his native habitat. He's a Finish
Sptiz, after all.
P1070018 shows Meg and Paul
working on interior paneling -- tongue-and groove 1x8s, about a dozen boards
per triangle.
P1080052 shows the whole crew,
with a finished bit of paneling and the big windows in the background.
P2120010 shows Kate teaching
Judy some 'pilates' exercises to relax (?).
P2130017 shows Kate in the loft
working on a panel featuring cut-outs around a light switch and the smoke
detector.
A fifty-second video of the Dome's interior, as of Nov '06. P3180005 shows Judy working on interior paneling in the loft near a window. P4150013 shows the ladder to the loft and parts of a couple freshly painted walls. P7070008 shows the interior, looking toward the big windows, at night. PA280019 shows the wood stove and the new carpet. P1010024 shows the snow-covered dome at night in January 07. P1010065 show blue winter sky behind snow-laden branches.
